Shaw is one of Washington’s most historic neighborhoods and one of the most important neighborhoods in African American history. Just like New York’s Harlem, Shaw was one of the centers of black culture in pre-World War II America, and was arguably the capital of African American intellectualism and culture in the early 20th century, with Langston Hughes, Alain Locke and Duke Ellington all calling the neighborhood home. Today the neighborhood has undergone much reconstruction--new condos stand side by side with Victorian row houses--but the neighborhood, home to venerable institutions like Ben’s Chili Bowl and the Lincoln Theatre, retains its distinctive character. The Shaw/Howard University and U St. Metro stops, on Metro’s Green Line, mean that downtown lies only a few minutes away. The neighborhood is bounded by M St. to the south, New Jersey Ave. to the east, Flordia Ave. to the north, and 11th St. to the west.
